KUCHING: The Sarawak Rangers have long been recognized for their exceptional contributions to Malaysia’s security and defense, earning them a well-deserved reputation as one of the country’s elite military units. With a rich and illustrious history, they have consistently safeguarded the nation’s interests throughout the years.
In a momentous celebration of the 60th anniversary of the first battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment (Battalion Pertama Rejimen Renjer Diraja or 1 RRD), the dedication and commitment of these courageous soldiers were prominently showcased.
Yesterday (Sept 22), at the prestigious Dato Othman Harun Hall in Wardieburn Camp, Kuala Lumpur, all members of the Sarawak Rangers congregated to commemorate this significant milestone. The event was graced by the presence of Lieutenant Colonel Mohd Afisyam Abd Raof, the Commanding Officer of the First Royal Regiment Battalion.
The ceremony commenced with the unit’s anthem, setting the tone for the occasion. Following that, a rank promotion ceremony was held, honoring three deserving individuals for their outstanding service and commitment.
The event further recognised the exceptional contributions of 30 members from various ranks, who were presented with the Excellent Service Award (APC) for the year 2022. Certificates of appreciation were also bestowed upon deserving individuals, acknowledging their remarkable dedication.
Beyond their military duties, the Sarawak Rangers have consistently demonstrated their commitment to the well-being of society. Various organizations, including the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) and the Malaysian Armed Forces Human Resources Branch (MATM CSM-Sel Kebajikan), have contributed to the welfare initiatives undertaken by the Sarawak Rangers. These initiatives serve as a testament to their unwavering dedication to the betterment of the community.
The celebration also served as a reminder of the vibrant cultural identity of the Sarawak Rangers. The event culminated with a rousing speech by the Commanding Officer of 1 RRD, followed by the traditional cry of “Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban.” This cry symbolises the profound values of honor, loyalty, and fighting spirit that define the essence of the Sarawak Rangers.
Tracing back to 1948, during the early stages of the Malayan Emergency, Iban trackers were enlisted to combat the Communist Party of Malaya.
Over time, they were formally organized into the Sarawak Rangers in 1953 and served as scouts alongside British units in Malaya. As Malaysia was formed on September 16, 1963, the unit transitioned from the British Colonial Forces to the Malaysian Army.
It subsequently expanded into a multi-battalion, multi-ethnic regiment known as ‘Renjer Malaysia,’ which later evolved into the ‘Rejimen Renjer’ in 1971.
Finally, in 1992, the unit was bestowed with the prestigious ‘Royal’ prefix, becoming the ‘Rejimen Renjer Diraja,’ or the Royal Ranger Regiment.
